Twelve local food and drink businesses from County Durham celebrated the county’s culinary heritage and showcased their products to Parliament in a special event ‘A Canny Taste of County Durham’ on Wednesday 13th March 2024.

This was the first time in history that a delegation of Country Durham food and drink business were invited to Parliament to showcase the incredible food and drink products, stories and rich heritage from the area.

Organised by The RT Hon Richard Holden, MP for North West Durham, Food and Drink North East were invited to attend and support the event.

Chris Jewitt, CEO of FADNE, said, “”We were delighted to support this event in the House of Commons. It was hugely inspiring to see such a strong group of County Durham brands and producers standing tall and together, waving a flag for the region and reminding the rest of the UK just how complete our food, drink and hospitality offer is in the North East.”

From cold pressed rapeseed oil from Lovesome Oil, chilli sauce from Screaming Chimp, and artisan cheese from Weardale Cheese, to award-winning Knitsley Farm Shop, the event was buzzing with regional flavours that showed off the best of the County Durham region.

Niall McKay-Mount of Screaming Chimp said, ” I loved this event and the surroundings. It was such a proud moment to be involved in the first cohort of food and drink producers from County Durham to be invited in Parliamentary history. As for how it will affect my business, well you’ll have to watch this space!”

“It was fantastic to celebrate together the culture and culinary traditions of our region. With the success of “A Canny Taste of County Durham,” we not only honoured County Durham but also stressed the importance of supporting our local British businesses,” said  The RT Hon Richard Holden MP.
